Mark McMorris is the definition of a meteoric rise and last season the trajectory of this quiet Canadian continued to astound.
Not yet old enough to rent a car or have a legal drink, McMorris won double gold at 2012 Winter X in Aspen, stomping the first triple cork 1440 in the history of the competition to secure the Big Air win. He also took the title in Davos at the O’Neill Evolution with a big backside double cork 1260. To add to the accolades, he took home the 2012 Transworld Rider’s Poll Rookie of the Year award. But for those who saw him burst onto the scene in 2011, stacking these stats comes as no surprise. How a flatland kid from Regina, Saskatchewan, learned to ride like this is anybody’s guess, but his progress can be easily measured in podiums around the world, including a 2011 X Games slopestyle silver and an impressive 2011 victory at the legendary Air and Style in Innsbruck. McMorris is just starting to rev up his competitive engine, but the kid rips regardless of cash prizes—as evidenced by his status as the rider with not one, but two triple cork variations under his belt. We’ve witnessed his talent in Brain Farm’s The Art of Flight and this season we’ll see another dimension of Mark’s corked out riding in Burton’s newest film, 13.
